Expanding Opportunities for UK-China Cooperation

During the meetings, both sides discussed practical pathways for deeper collaboration.

Representatives noted significant opportunities for British companies in sectors such as healthcare, technology, consumer brands, and cultural industries to expand into the Chinese market. China’s scale, investment environment, and consumer demand continue to offer substantial growth potential for businesses able to combine innovative concepts with international management expertise.

At the same time, Beijing Mentougou-based enterprises are increasingly seeking access to European markets. Particular interest was expressed in supporting the international growth of Chinese AI applications, digital innovation projects, and the rapidly growing short-form drama industry, which has seen strong growth in overseas markets.

Both sides also identified talent development as a strategic priority. Future initiatives may include internship programmes, student exchanges, graduate employment opportunities, and entrepreneurship support for both Chinese and international students.

In addition, discussions explored opportunities to increase awareness of Beijing Mentougou across the UK and Europe through tourism promotion, and cultural

exchanges.

As part of the programme, the 48 Group also organised a visit to Octopus Energy, one of the UK’s leading energy technology companies.

The delegation was welcomed by Chris Fitzgerald, Group Director for International Affairs, and Jono Faber, Commercial Manager for Flexibility & Virtual Power Plants. They were joined by Kieron Stopforth, Head of Flexibility & Virtual Power Plants, who introduced the company’s business model and technological capabilities.

During the visit, delegates toured Octopus Energy’s operations and learned about:

  1. The use of smart grid technologies and virtual power plant systems to reduce energy costs for consumers;
  2. The role of the Kraken technology platform in managing and optimising energy assets;
  3. Electric vehicle charging and mobility solutions;
  4. The structure and operation of the UK energy trading market.

A roundtable discussion followed, covering:

  1. An overview of Beijing Mentougou District’s development strategy;
  2. The district’s plans for green electricity and smart grid applications;
  3. Octopus Energy’s expertise in digital energy systems and virtual power plants;
  4. The company’s latest cooperation projects in China;
  5. Potential areas for future collaboration between Mentougou District and Octopus Energy.

Both sides expressed strong interest in exploring future partnerships in renewable energy, digital infrastructure, and sustainable urban development.

Building a New Chapter of UK-China Cooperation

The strategic cooperation agreement reflects a shared commitment to fostering innovation-led growth, strengthening people-to-people ties, and creating new opportunities for businesses, institutions, and communities in both countries.

As global industries continue to evolve, the 48 Group will continue to assist British business to access and succeed in the Chinese market, helping connect British expertise with Chinese innovation and creating long-term value across multiple sectors.
