Delegation of student union leaders convenes in London to present findings from China visit and chart a course for deeper bilateral student engagement

London, United Kingdom — Young Icebreakers today convened its China Delegation reunion session at King’s College London, bringing together student union leaders to reflect on their recent visit to China and present a set of findings that carry significant implications for how UK universities engage with their Chinese student communities and how they support all students in pursuing international opportunities.

The delegation's visit to China revealed two interconnected gaps that UK institutions have yet to fully address. First, a persistent disconnect between Chinese students studying in the United Kingdom and the student unions nominally representing them. Second, a broader failure to equip UK students with the awareness, confidence, and practical pathways to explore international destinations, including China, as viable and enriching environments for personal and professional development.

Key Findings from the China Visit

The delegation returned from China with a clear and urgent message.Chinese students in the UK are underserved by student unions that have historically adopted a passive approach to international student engagement. Many Chinese students report feeling peripheral to the institutions meant to advocate for them, a sentiment that compounds the cultural and linguistic adjustments already inherent in studying abroad.

Equally, the delegation observed that China presents a wealth of substantive opportunities for UK students, spanning internships, structured cultural exchange programmes, and collaborative academic initiatives. These opportunities remain largely untapped due to a lack of visibility and institutional support, reflecting a wider tendency among UK students to limit their international ambitions to a narrow set of familiar destinations.

Three Commitments Going Forward

Following today's session, Young Icebreakers has outlined three areas of committed action.

First, student unions across the UK must take a proactive and structured approach to engagingChinese students. This means moving beyond token representation and investing in genuine, sustained outreach that meets students where they are.

Second, UK institutions must broaden the international horizons of their domestic students. China offers tangible opportunities for career development, cross-cultural competency, and mutual understanding that should be actively promoted through careers services and student engagement teams.

Third, YoungIcebreakers will design and deliver a programme of high-impact, two-way engagements planned well in advance, ensuring that both Chinese students in theUK and UK students exploring China have access to meaningful, well-supported experiences that build lasting understanding between the two communities.

"This trip made clear that goodwill alone is not enough. We need deliberate action, better structures, and a genuine commitment from institutions to serve every student they enrol. That includes helping UK students see the world beyond what is familiar to them." Young Icebreakers China Delegation
